What a typical block paving install looks like
Every job varies, but the standard sequence for a 50–80m² driveway:
Day 1 — Site prep + excavation We remove the existing surface (tarmac, gravel, old broken paving — whatever's there) and excavate down to firm sub-base level. For a car-loaded driveway, that's 200–250mm below the finished surface. All spoil is removed off-site the same day.
Day 2 — Sub-base + edge restraints We lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base (100–150mm), install concrete edge restraints along all boundaries (essential — without them, blocks migrate over years), then a 30–50mm sharp sand laying course.
Day 3–4 — Block laying Blocks laid in your chosen pattern (herringbone, stretcher bond, basketweave, or a custom design). We cut against the edges with a disc-cutter and jointing sand is brushed in at the end.
Day 5 — Finishing + sealing (optional) Final sand brushing, whacker plate to lock everything in, drainage channels connected if fitted, and (if you've opted for it) a joint stabilising sealer applied.
Total: 3–5 working days for a standard driveway. Larger driveways (100m²+) or complex designs take 6–8 days.
Manchester-specific things we handle that national installers don't
Manchester has some quirks that a family-run local installer knows to plan for and a national contractor will get wrong:
- Planning permission for driveways above 5m² if the surface is non-permeable. We'll advise on permeable options up-front if this applies to your build.
- Cheshire clay soils on the south side (Wilmslow, Hale, Alderley Edge) — these swell and shrink significantly with moisture. We use extra-deep sub-bases (up to 300mm) in these areas.
- Manchester's terraced-house driveways — often narrow (2.4m or less) with awkward angles. We hand-cut blocks around bay windows and boundary walls rather than gapping-and-mortaring.
- Sandstone kerb integration in South Manchester's Victorian streets — we colour-match block paving to the existing sandstone kerbstones instead of using a jarring modern concrete edge.
If a driveway "just" needs installing, any national contractor can do it. If you want it to look right against your particular Manchester house, family-run beats corporate.

How long does block paving last?
Concrete block paving in the Manchester climate typically lasts 20–25 years before needing significant repair. Clay pavers last 40+ years. Both need occasional re-sanding of joints (every 3–5 years) to prevent weed growth and block migration.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
If your driveway is over 5m² AND the surface is non-permeable (like standard concrete blocks laid on a non-porous sub-base), YES — you need planning permission from Manchester City Council. If you use permeable paving or route rainwater to a lawn/border, NO permission is needed.

Can you install block paving in winter?
Yes — as long as the ground temperature is above 3°C and there's no imminent frost warning. Concrete edge restraints need to cure for 24 hours minimum. We schedule around weather forecasts and won't lay blocks in freezing conditions (it damages the sub-base).
November–February we typically have shorter waiting lists too — often 2–3 weeks vs 5–6 weeks in peak summer.
What's the difference between block paving and slabs?
Blocks are small (typically 200mm x 100mm) and interlock with sand-filled joints — designed for driveways with vehicle loads. Slabs are larger (300mm x 300mm+) and designed for patios/paths where the load is only foot traffic. Using slabs on a driveway is a common installer mistake — they crack within 3-5 years under repeated car use.
Do you install block paving in Cheshire as well as Manchester?
Yes — we cover Manchester, Trafford, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham, Wilmslow, Hale, Knutsford, Congleton, and everywhere in between. Our normal service radius is 30 minutes' drive from central Manchester. Beyond that we may charge a small mobilisation fee.
Can you match existing block paving on a driveway extension?
Usually yes — most concrete block manufacturers keep colour ranges consistent for 5+ years, and clay pavers are typically a lifetime colour match. Bring us a picture (or a spare block) and we'll source-match. Occasionally with very old driveways (20+ years) the exact colour is discontinued — in which case we'll suggest a complementary contrast instead.
