What is an imprinted concrete driveway?
Imprinted concrete is a single-piece concrete slab poured onto your prepared driveway, then stamped with a textured mould BEFORE it cures — leaving a pattern that looks like natural stone, cobblestone, brick, timber, or slate. Colour is added via powder pigment mixed into the concrete + surface acid-stain applied post-cure. The result is a driveway that looks like premium natural materials (£150+/m²) at concrete pricing (£85-£130/m²).

Why imprinted concrete for a Manchester driveway?

The 3 things that make or break an imprinted concrete install
An imprinted driveway is only as good as three components — get any wrong and the driveway fails within 5 years:
1. The sub-base
The concrete slab is 100-150mm thick. Beneath it MUST be a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base at 150-200mm depth. Cutting sub-base depth is where cowboy installers save money — and where their driveways crack after 2-3 winters. We spec 200mm every time.
2. The concrete mix + reinforcement
The concrete grade must be C35/45 minimum (not the cheaper C25/30 some installers use). It must be reinforced with either steel mesh OR polypropylene fibre (fibre-reinforced concrete is our default — cheaper, no rust, better crack resistance). Reinforcement isn't optional even though it's invisible.
3. The sealer
Imprinted concrete NEEDS a proper acrylic sealer applied 24 hours after pouring, then resealed every 3-5 years. Without sealer, the surface fades, colour bleeds, and grease/oil stains ingrain. With sealer, the driveway looks new for 20 years. Cheap installers skip the initial seal — huge false economy for the customer.
Every quote from us specifies the sub-base depth, concrete grade, and sealer product. Every quote should. Ask any competing quote for the same three specs — the answers will tell you the quality tier.
Pattern and colour options
We install using Pavatile and Excel Imprints systems (the two most respected UK imprinted concrete brands).

- Cobble Stone — rounded, medieval look. Good for older cottage-style properties.
- Slate Cliff — riven slate texture. Modern, dramatic.

- Random Stone — natural, non-repeating stone look. Suits detached houses.
- Board-formed Wood — timber-plank texture. Contemporary look for modern properties.

Colour choices in 30+ tones — from earthy sandstones (buff, tan, weathered stone) through to greys (mid-grey, charcoal, slate) through to warmer tones (terracotta, russet, autumn brown).

Larger driveways (80m²+) come down slightly per-m² due to labour efficiency. Smaller (<25m²) driveways come up per-m² because mixing minimums make small pours less cost-effective.
Where imprinted concrete is NOT the right choice
We recommend against imprinted concrete if:
- Very heavy vehicles regularly drive on it (large lorries, plant machinery) — block paving handles concentrated loads better
- Existing driveway has severe subsidence — the concrete slab will still crack even with reinforcement if the ground moves significantly
- You want a driveway that never needs sealing — resin bound is your answer, at ~30% higher cost
- The area is under 15m² — mixing/pouring minimums make it inefficient
If any of these apply we'll say so at the site visit and suggest an alternative.
Our install process
Day 1 — Excavation + sub-base Existing surface removed and taken off-site. Sub-base excavated to 200mm depth. MOT Type 1 laid and compacted with vibrating plate. Formwork (timber shuttering) set up along boundaries.
Day 2 — Concrete pour + imprint Concrete delivered by ready-mix truck (typically 6-8 cubic metres for a standard driveway). Poured and levelled. While still workable, powder release agent applied and pattern mats/rollers stamped into surface. Colour and detail work finished by hand at edges. Left to cure overnight.
Day 3 — Colour + sealer Once concrete has set (24 hours) but before fully cured, acid stain applied (adds depth and character to the colour). Left another 24 hours. Then final acrylic sealer applied by roller — clear or slightly-tinted for extra colour depth.
Total: 2-3 days on-site. Drivable after 5-7 days (light use) or 10-14 days (fully cured).

FAQs
How long does imprinted concrete last?
20+ years with proper install + regular resealing (every 3-5 years). Colour will fade slightly over that time — a good reseal restores it. After 20 years, either replace the surface (£4-6k) or apply a resurfacing layer over the existing (£2-3k).
Can I have a mix of patterns?
Yes — many of our installs combine two patterns. E.g. a York Stone main driveway with a cobble border, or Random Stone main with Slate Cliff step-down features. Design consultation is part of the quote.
Is it slippery when wet?
Imprinted concrete surfaces vary — textured patterns (Random Stone, Slate Cliff) have good grip in the wet. Smoother patterns (Board-formed Wood, York Stone) can be slightly slippery. Non-slip additives can be mixed into the sealer for £180 supplement — recommended for sloped driveways.
Do you install imprinted concrete over an existing driveway?
Sometimes. If the existing surface is sound and level, we can overlay with a thinner (80mm) reinforced imprinted concrete surface. Saves on excavation cost but adds a small step up at the boundaries. We'll advise at site visit whether overlay is feasible.
How does imprinted concrete compare to resin driveways in Manchester?
- Aesthetics: imprinted concrete = premium natural-materials look. Resin = contemporary seamless look. Different aesthetics for different houses.
- Lifespan: imprinted 20 years, resin 25 years (with correct product)
- Cost: imprinted £85-£130/m², resin £110-£170/m²
- Permeability: resin is permeable (no planning permission). Imprinted concrete is not (5m²+ over impermeable surface needs planning approval)

Can you install in winter?
Yes but weather-dependent. Concrete needs to be above 5°C during the pour and for 24 hours afterwards. In Manchester November-February we sometimes wait for a mild spell. Winter installs are often 20-30% cheaper (fewer weather-competition).
What if the concrete cracks?
With proper install + reinforcement, hairline cracks are rare but not impossible (all concrete moves slightly). Any crack under 0.5mm is normal and self-heals over years. Larger cracks are covered under warranty — we repair by colour-matching and injection.
