What is a resin bound driveway?

A resin bound driveway is a mix of clear polyurethane resin and natural (or dyed) aggregate stones, trowelled onto a prepared sub-base in a continuous, seamless surface. Unlike gravel (which migrates) or block paving (which has jointing between blocks), a resin driveway is one solid surface with no gaps, no weeds, and no maintenance beyond an occasional sweep.

Two important terminology points that matter for a Manchester install:

  • Resin BOUND — the correct choice for driveways. Aggregate mixed with resin BEFORE application, then trowelled smooth. Result: strong, permeable surface that cars drive on for 25+ years.
  • Resin BONDED — cheaper, weaker. Aggregate scattered onto a resin coating already applied to the ground. Cannot handle car loads reliably. Not what you want for a driveway. Some installers try to save money by using bonded and calling it "resin driveway." We only install BOUND — always ask any quote what they're proposing.

Why resin is popular for Manchester driveways in 2026

Resin driveways have grown from a niche installation five years ago to one of the most-requested surfaces we quote. The reasons Manchester homeowners choose resin:

  1. Planning-compliant by default — resin bound is permeable, so it doesn't need planning permission (unlike non-permeable block paving over 5m²)
  2. Frost-resistant — no water sits on the surface, so no freeze-thaw damage
  3. Weed-free — no joints means nothing for weeds to germinate in
  4. Fast install — 3-4 days for a standard driveway vs 5-7 for block paving
  5. Contemporary aesthetic — clean, seamless look that suits new-builds and modern extensions particularly well
  6. Genuine 25-year lifespan — assuming proper install with UV-stable resin (see below)
  7. Wheelchair-and-pushchair friendly — smooth surface with no jointing bumps

What UV-stable actually means (and why installers hide it)

The most important question when getting a resin driveway quote in Manchester is: "Is the resin UV-stable?"

Cheap resin driveways use aromatic (non-UV-stable) resin. It's cheaper. And within 12-18 months in the UK sun, it yellows. Badly. What was a slate-grey driveway is now a pale ochre driveway. It's a common horror-story on driveway review sites and forums.

We only install aliphatic (UV-stable) resin. It's about 15% more expensive at cost. It stays the colour you chose for the full 25-year lifespan.

Every quote we give specifies the resin brand and grade. If any other quote you're getting doesn't mention the resin type — that's your prompt to ask.

Aggregate options — what your driveway will actually look like

The colour and texture of a resin bound driveway comes from the aggregate — small natural stones mixed into the resin.

Popular Manchester choices in 2026:

  • Rustic Autumn — warm rust/amber tones, suits red-brick 1930s houses
  • Silver Grey — cool contemporary look, suits new-builds and modern extensions
  • Buff Bronze — mid-tone, warms concrete rendered houses
  • Old English Blend — mixed golden/rust/black speckles, suits Victorian villas
  • Onyx — deep black with light flecks, dramatic, suits modernist architecture
  • Sunrise — creamy pale blend, brightens shaded gardens

We bring physical samples to the quote visit — colour on a photo never matches colour laid on the ground. We're near you (Manchester + Cheshire base), so a site visit with samples is free and takes 30 minutes.

Cost — the honest breakdown

Resin driveway installation cost depends on:

  1. Surface area — bigger driveways get lower £/m² rates
  2. Aggregate choice — standard vs premium colour blends
  3. Sub-base condition — is the existing surface removable or salvageable?
  4. Complexity — curves, borders, integrated drainage

Guide pricing for a typical Manchester 50m² driveway (existing tarmac being removed):

Element Cost estimate
Existing surface removal + spoil disposal £900–£1,300
Sub-base preparation (permeable MOT Type 3 or similar) £1,000–£1,500
Resin bound surface (mid-range aggregate) £4,000–£6,500
Edge details + finishing £400–£700
TOTAL £6,300–£10,000

Premium aggregates and larger areas obviously shift these numbers. All our quotes are fixed price after site visit — no "starting from" pricing that turns into a surprise.

Where resin bound is NOT the right choice

Being honest: resin isn't right for every driveway. It's not:

  • A patch fix — small area repairs almost never match colour to existing resin
  • Best for very heavy vehicles — HGVs, plant machinery. Block paving or concrete is more resilient
  • Suitable over very poor sub-base — resin cannot compensate for cracked or unstable ground beneath. We'll excavate and rebuild before applying if needed (adds cost)
  • Ideal for driveways under 8m² — mixing minimums make small-area installs pricey per m²

If any of these apply, we'll tell you up-front and recommend an alternative.

Our install process

Day 1 — Removal and prep Existing surface stripped out and spoil taken away same-day. Sub-base excavated to correct depth.

Day 2 — Sub-base Permeable MOT Type 3 (or equivalent) laid and compacted. Edge restraints set. Time for the sub-base to settle overnight.

Day 3 — Resin application Aggregate weighed and mixed with resin in on-site paddle mixer (proper ratios matter — 8-9 seconds is the mix time). Trowelled onto prepared sub-base by hand. Fully worked to eliminate air bubbles.

Day 4 — Curing No walking or driving for 24 hours. Full cure to vehicle load after 48 hours. Broom-clean handover on day 5.

Guarantee + aftercare

  • 10-year workmanship guarantee — insurance-backed via our trade body
  • 25-year manufacturer warranty on the resin against yellowing (UV-stable spec only)
  • Free jet-wash + refresh at year 5 — we come back, deep clean the surface, patch any wear
  • Small-area repair available should any localised damage occur (car scraping etc.)

We register every job with the resin manufacturer and issue you a copy of the warranty certificate at handover.

FAQs

How do I know if my resin driveway is UV-stable?

Ask for the exact product name and grade. "Aliphatic" resin is UV-stable. "Aromatic" is not. Every resin manufacturer publishes both — we install only aliphatic. Ask any competing quote the same question — the answer will tell you the quality tier they're proposing.

Do resin driveways get slippery in wet weather?

Only if the aggregate blend is smooth-face (very rare — mostly used for indoor commercial). All our aggregate blends have natural texture that provides grip in the wet. We don't use polished pebble.

Can you install resin on top of my existing driveway?

Sometimes. If the existing surface is sound (no cracks, no movement, no ponding), we can install directly onto it — saving the excavation cost. If there's ANY doubt about the sub-base, we'll advise excavation. We won't install over a compromised base — 3 years down the line the whole surface would crack.

What happens if I get oil or paint on it?

Fresh oil: soak up with cat litter, wash with hot water and washing-up liquid. Old ingrained oil: proprietary resin cleaner (£12 from us). Paint: white spirit or nail-varnish remover on a cloth (test in an inconspicuous corner first). Resin bound is far easier to clean than block paving.

Is it noisy under car tyres compared to tarmac?

Slightly quieter. The aggregate texture absorbs a small amount of tyre noise vs smooth tarmac. Not dramatic but noticeable.

How long from quote acceptance to install?

Usually 3-6 weeks in peak season (May–September), 2-3 weeks in autumn/winter. Emergency installs (existing surface failed catastrophically) we can often accommodate within 10 days.

Can I have logos, patterns, or borders in resin?

Yes — we can install different-colour resin borders, house numbers, or simple logos as insets in the main driveway. Adds cost (typically £300-£1,200) but a nice bespoke touch.
